Salalah – The ‘Jewel of Arabia’ expedition, which commenced on January 6 from Suwaih Beach in the Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, South Sharqiyah Governorate, successfully concluded in Salalah on Saturday. The journey, undertaken by a team of Omani and British explorers, retraced the historic routes of the famed British explorer Bertram Thomas, paying homage to his pioneering travels across the Arabian Peninsula in the early 20th century.

Spanning the stunning landscapes of North Sharqiyah, Al Wusta, and Dhofar Governorates, the expedition covered vast distances using a combination of traditional and modern transportation methods. The team relied on camel caravans, trekked on foot, and utilised four-wheel-drive vehicles to navigate the diverse terrain, which ranged from desert dunes to rugged mountains and lush coastal plains.

The journey was not without its challenges, as the explorers faced shifting climates and demanding conditions, mirroring the trials endured by Bertram Thomas nearly a century ago. The expedition served as a testament to the endurance and adaptability of the participants, who embraced the spirit of adventure and discovery.

A key objective of the ‘Jewel of Arabia’ expedition was to strengthen the historical and cultural ties between Oman and the United Kingdom.
