Muscat – Oman is moving towards finalising a national climate change adaptation plan aimed at strengthening the ability of key sectors and communities to withstand current and future climate risks.

A three-day workshop began in Muscat on Monday to review climate change scenarios, assess the implications of these for different sectors and identify priorities, gaps and requirements for adapting to the effects.

Organised by the Environment Authority (EA) with the participation of relevant government and other entities, the workshop is part of the final stages of preparing an integrated National Adaptation Plan.

Participants are reviewing the main findings and outputs produced by the project so far, while examining national priorities and challenges related to climate adaptation.

The discussions are also intended to identify gaps in existing preparedness and determine what different sectors require to respond more effectively to changing climate conditions.

The authority said the process seeks to ensure that the final plan reflects the needs and priorities of sectors likely to be affected by climate change.

Participants will exchange views, experiences and proposals during the workshop, with their input expected to feed into the final document.

The plan is intended to strengthen national preparedness and resilience by providing a coordinated framework for responding to climate risks and the potential impacts of these on sectors and communities.

The workshop also aims to improve coordination among stakeholders whose responsibilities intersect with climate adaptation, ensuring that sectoral priorities are incorporated into the national approach.

Preparing the plan comes as Oman seeks to integrate climate considerations more closely into sustainable development planning and strengthen institutional coordination on environmental challenges.

According to the EA, the initiative will support the sultanate’s capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change and reduce the repercussions of these across different sectors.

The authority said greater coordination among national institutions would also help align climate adaptation measures with broader development priorities and improve preparedness for future climate-related risks.
