Muscat – Muscat Municipality has released a set of formal safety procedures aimed at minimising risks during excavation and backfilling operations.
Before any excavation commences, the authority mandates a thorough site inspection to identify underground utility lines, such as electricity and water networks. During active excavation, contractors are required to secure the site by keeping materials and equipment at least 1.5 metres from edges to prevent collapse and must install appropriate barriers to protect pedestrians.
Safety requirements for personnel working inside pits include the provision of nearby ladders for rapid emergency exits, alongside the mandatory use of protective gear, including helmets, safety boots, and high-visibility vests.
Furthermore, for backfilling activities, the municipality instructs that materials be placed in successive, thoroughly compacted layers to prevent soil settlement.
