Muscat – Duty-free markets are being planned at three land border crossings to stimulate trade, support tourism and enhance services for travellers in Oman.
Lt Gen Hassan bin Mohsin Al Shuraiqi, Inspector General of Police and Customs at Royal Oman Police, has issued Decision No 145/2026 establishing duty-free markets at the Al Wajajah, Khatmat Malaha and Rub Al Khali border crossings.
The decision aims to stimulate economic and commercial activity at the land ports by making products and goods available at competitive prices through exemptions from customs duties and taxes, subject to applicable regulations.
The duty-free markets are also expected to contribute to tourism development, support the logistics sector and improve the travel experience by offering passengers a wider range of shopping options.
The three locations serve as land gateways connecting Oman with neighbouring countries. Al Wajajah and Khatmat Malaha are on Oman’s border with the United Arab Emirates, while the Rub Al Khali crossing connects Oman with Saudi Arabia.
Establishment of duty-free markets at these crossings is intended to enhance their commercial role and create additional value for travellers using the land routes. Duty-free facilities allow eligible goods to be sold under applicable customs and tax arrangements.
The announcement did not specify when the markets would begin operating or provide details of the products to be sold, the investment involved or the expected economic impact.
The initiative aims to boost commercial activity at Oman’s land border ports while supporting tourism and logistics services.
