Muscat – Muscat Municipality has launched a public awareness campaign highlighting the importance of complying with smoking regulations in enclosed public places, as part of ongoing efforts to protect public health and promote a cleaner environment.

The campaign emphasises that smoking in enclosed public areas poses health risks not only to smokers but also to those around them through exposure to second-hand smoke. According to the municipality, the harmful effects are particularly significant for children, elderly individuals and people suffering from respiratory conditions.

Through educational messages and public outreach materials, the municipality is encouraging residents and visitors to follow the regulations governing smoking in public spaces. The campaign outlines several key requirements, including adhering to notices and instructions displayed at public facilities, using designated smoking areas where available and refraining from smoking in enclosed public places.

Municipal officials stressed that maintaining smoke-free indoor environments is essential to safeguarding community health and ensuring a comfortable atmosphere for all members of society. They noted that reducing exposure to tobacco smoke contributes to preventing a range of health problems, including respiratory illnesses and other long-term medical conditions.

The campaign is part of broader efforts by Muscat Municipality to enhance public awareness of health and safety standards and encourage responsible behaviour in shared spaces. Authorities have called on the public to cooperate with regulations and support measures aimed at improving the quality of life in the capital.

The campaign carries the message ‘Clean air… A right we all share’,underscoring the collective responsibility of individuals to respect public health requirements and contribute to creating healthier environments in workplaces, shopping centres, restaurants and other enclosed public facilities.

Muscat Municipality continues to implement awareness programmes throughout the year, focusing on issues related to public health, environmental sustainability and community well-being, in line with efforts to build a healthier and more sustainable city for residents and visitors alike.
