MoH outlines mandatory premarital medical screening process

15 Jun 2026 MoH outlines mandatory premarital medical screening process By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Ministry of Health (MoH) has formalised the procedure for premarital medical examinations, now a mandatory prerequisite for all Omani citizens and residents planning to marry. This initiative is designed to foster healthier families by identifying potential genetic and infectious health risks before the marriage contract is finalised.

The mandated process involves the following steps:

  • The medical certificate remains valid for a period of three months from the date of the examination.
  • Couples must visit an approved government or private healthcare institution within the Sultanate to initiate the screening.
  • A physician will conduct a comprehensive review of both parties’ medical histories, including chronic and hereditary conditions.
  • The examination includes blood tests for genetic blood disorders, such as thalassemia and sickle cell anaemia, as well as screenings for sexually transmitted infectious diseases.
  • Following the tests, the physician provides professional medical counselling, explaining the results and discussing preventive or treatment options if necessary.
  • In cases requiring specialised care, patients are referred to relevant medical experts for further guidance.
  • Upon successful completion of the examinations and counselling, the health institution issues an official premarital medical certificate.
  • A digital copy of this certificate is securely transmitted to the Notary Public platform at the Supreme Judicial Council to validate the marriage contract.
