Muscat – Construction has officially begun on the landmark Muttrah Square project, a development based on the winning entry of the Bilarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design, as Muscat Municipality moves forward with plans to create a new civic and tourism destination overlooking the historic waterfront.

The project is set to redefine the entrance to Muttrah through an iconic architectural concept centred on a striking arch-shaped bridge that will rise above the heart of the square beside the sea. Inspired by the sword of Imam Al Salt bin Malik Al Kharusi, the bridge is designed to serve as both a symbolic and functional landmark, reflecting Oman’s rich heritage while embracing contemporary design.

From the elevated bridge, visitors will enjoy panoramic views of Muttrah’s most celebrated landmarks, including the bustling corniche, surrounding mountains and the district’s historic urban landscape. The structure is expected to become a signature viewing point for residents and tourists alike.

Encircling the bridge will be a spacious public plaza featuring a dancing fountain, landscaped gathering areas, retail outlets and cafés. Carefully designed lighting will illuminate the space at night, with visual effects intended to blend harmoniously with the movement and colours of the sea, creating a vibrant waterfront atmosphere.

Muscat Municipality said the project is part of its strategy to deliver high-quality public spaces that enhance the city’s identity and improve the quality of urban life. By integrating architecture, culture and recreation, Muttrah Square aims to consolidate the wilayat’s position as one of Oman’s premier heritage and tourism destinations.

The development is also expected to boost the economic and cultural value of Muttrah by attracting visitors, supporting local businesses and providing a venue for community events and leisure activities.
