Muscat – National Records and Archives Authority inaugurated the International Conference on Oral History in Muscat on Monday in collaboration with Wathiqat Wattan Foundation from Syria.
The event was held under the patronage of Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat.
The three-day conference brings together experts from across the Arab world and beyond to address the challenges specific to oral history in Arab societies.
It aims to highlight the significance of oral traditions in historical documentation, explore how oral history can be incorporated into educational curriculum, and discuss ways to further develop the Arab experience in preserving this cultural heritage.
Academics, specialists and officials who have played key roles in preserving oral history are participating with representatives from Oman, Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Tunisia, Palestine and Syria, besides China, Russia and Iran.
The conference will see countries presenting their efforts in collecting oral testimonies to document political, economic, social and cultural developments.
Oman’s commitment to its rich cultural and historical heritage is central to this event. By hosting such a gathering, the sultanate not only reaffirms its dedication to documenting its own history and civilisation but also promotes cultural dialogue and the exchange of experiences between nations.
