Mucsat – Omani youth are getting hands-on experience in CubeSat technology under a two-week training programme aimed at building skills for the country’s emerging space sector.

The Oman Orbit programme, organised by the Youth Centre in cooperation with Etco Space, introduces participants to the design, assembly and operation of small satellites while linking space applications to national development priorities.

Training begins with an overview of the space sector before moving into practical work on satellite subsystems, wireless communications, Global Positioning System technology and Earth observation data.

Participants are also developing graduation projects based on skills acquired during the camp.

The programme focuses on the main systems used in CubeSats, including satellite structures, power, onboard computing, control systems and communications. The aim is to give participants a practical understanding of how the individual components work together in orbit.

Space applications with direct relevance to Oman form another key part of the training.

Participants are exploring how satellite technologies and geospatial data can support early flood-warning systems, marine monitoring, agriculture and efforts to combat desertification.

The camp also offers practical training in embedded systems, sensor data collection, radio frequency communications and geospatial analysis, combining classroom learning with the tools used in modern space projects.

Beyond engineering, Oman Orbit introduces participants to the expanding new space economy and opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship and employment.

The programme also highlights international space projects led by students and young researchers, giving participants a broader view of possible academic and professional paths in the sector.

The initiative forms part of efforts to develop a pool of young Omanis with practical space-technology skills as the sultanate seeks to expand capabilities in satellite applications and the wider space economy.
