Muscat – Two Omani students have developed an artificial intelligence-powered robot that automatically sorts waste into different categories, offering an innovative solution to improve recycling and support environmental sustainability.

Titled ‘Waste sorting using robots’, the project was created by Al Reem bint Rashid Al Isai and Al Noorah bint Jaafar Al Ajmi. The system combines robotics, sensors, cameras, programming and AI to identify and separate waste into plastic, paper, metal and glass.

Designed to make recycling more efficient, the project aims to reduce dependence on manual waste sorting, increase the recovery of recyclable materials and promote environmental awareness among students and the wider community.

Al Reem said the idea was inspired by the growing challenge of waste accumulation and the difficulties associated with manual sorting.

“Our goal was to develop a smart robot capable of recognising different types of waste and directing these to the appropriate recycling bin,” she said.

She added that automated sorting helps reduce contamination of recyclable materials, improves recycling efficiency and supports efforts to conserve natural resources.

According to Al Noorah, the project also provided valuable hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

“It enabled us to apply programming, sensor technology, motor control and AI to solve a real-world environmental problem,” she said, adding that the experience strengthened the team’s creativity, teamwork and technical problem-solving skills.

Project supervisor Asma bint Abdullah Al Farsi said the innovation demonstrates how advanced technology can be used to address environmental challenges while encouraging students to develop practical and sustainable solutions.

She added that such projects equip young people with future-ready skills, promote a culture of innovation and help reduce the health risks associated with manual waste sorting.

The project reflects the growing role of young Omani innovators in developing technology-driven solutions that contribute to environmental protection and a more sustainable future.
