New York – Permanent Mission of Oman, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, recently hosted a side event titled “Progress and Prospects for the Conference on the Establishment of a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction.” This meeting took place alongside the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. H E Ambassador Omar bin Saeed Al Kathiri, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the UN and President of the Seventh Session of the Conference, stated that Oman’s leadership reflects international confidence in its balanced and constructive approach to regional dialogue. He emphasised that the conference provides a vital framework for a collective approach based on consensus to address disarmament issues.
During the event, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, praised the responsible leadership of the Sultanate and its initiatives to enhance transparency and international participation. She noted that the conference serves as an essential platform for multilateral dialogue, allowing regional states to engage in sustainable discussions despite current challenges. The progress made reflects an increasing commitment from involved countries toward the strategic goal of regional peace. This initiative underscores Oman’s ongoing commitment to supporting international disarmament and non-proliferation efforts through diplomacy and moderation, ultimately serving the interests of regional and global security.
