Muscat – The Muttrah cable car project is expected to open by the end of 2026, adding a new tourism and entertainment attraction to Muscat, according to Khalid bin Saeed Al Nabhani, co-founder and CEO of Sabeen Group, the owner of the project. 

In an interview with Oman Radio, Al Nabhani said the project was progressing steadily towards completion after challenges associated with the mountainous terrain had been addressed.

“The project will be ready before the end of 2026,” he said.

The Muttrah cable car is being developed as more than a transport facility, with its stations designed to provide visitors with cultural, leisure and entertainment experiences, alongside panoramic views of Muttrah and its historic surroundings.

The project will comprise three main stations linking the port area with mountain viewpoints. The first station will be located near Muttrah Fish Market, the second on the mountain behind Riyam Park, and the third at Hay Al Ward near Kalbuh Park.

The cable car route will extend for about 3km and include 18 cabins, each with a capacity of up to eight passengers.

Al Nabhani said the project was intended to become a destination in its own right, enabling visitors to experience Muttrah from an elevated perspective while exploring its cultural and tourism offerings.

“This project is about offering an experience to tourists visiting the capital. The idea is to create a destination where visitors can enjoy the cable car journey itself while taking in panoramic views of the historic city from above,” he said.

The largest station – near Muttrah Fish Market, known as Rope View – will feature more than 20 restaurants and cafes, offering dining and leisure facilities.

Another key component is the Muttrah Digital House, which will present the stories and history of Muttrah through digital technology.

The project will also include a theatre, providing a venue for cultural and entertainment events.

Al Nabhani said ticket prices for the cable car would be among the lowest compared to similar projects in countries across the region.

The project is expected to add to Muttrah’s tourism offering by combining transport, heritage, entertainment and panoramic views within a single destination.

Its location connecting the port area with the surrounding mountains is also intended to provide visitors with a new way to explore Muttrah while complementing established attractions, including the historic souq and waterfront.
