Muscat – Oman has launched a Green Artificial Intelligence Alliance to promote the use of cleaner energy in AI and high-performance computing as the country seeks to reduce the environmental impact of its expanding digital economy.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology held the alliance’s inaugural meeting on Monday in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the Authority for Public Services Regulation.

The initiative brings together government entities, private companies, academic and research institutions and investors to develop what officials described as a national ecosystem for green AI.

At the meeting, participants approved the alliance’s founding document, formed a technical committee and reviewed its 2026 work plan.

A key focus will be increasing the use of renewable and low-emission energy to power AI technologies and high-performance computing systems, which can require large amounts of electricity.

The alliance will also support research into energy-efficient and low-emission computing and help develop national expertise in sustainable AI.

Another objective is to encourage private companies to adopt greener technologies and explore incentives that could accelerate investment in clean digital solutions.

The alliance will serve as a platform for attracting local and international partners and supporting projects that combine technological development with environmental sustainability and economic returns.

It also plans to promote cooperation with international organisations and research institutions to exchange expertise and adopt global standards in sustainable AI.

Green AI has gained importance globally as the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence increases demand for computing power and energy.

For Oman, the initiative is intended to support the goals of  Vision 2040 by linking digital growth with environmental protection and greater use of renewable energy.

The alliance also plans to expand its membership and strengthen its regional and international presence as Oman develops its capabilities in AI, advanced computing and clean energy.
