Muscat – An Omani university theatre troupe has picked up a string of awards at an international festival in Tunisia, including honours for scenography, acting and scriptwriting.

The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) in Ibri competed with a play titled Al Lamd at the 20th International University Theatre Festival in Monastir, held from August 8 to 16.

The festival brought together around 350 students and theatre artists from 15 countries, including 11 Arab nations, according to organisers.

The play won for best scenography, while Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Ghafri took second place for best actor.

Writer Maram bint Ali Al Muqbali received an encouragement award for the script, which also secured second place in the script category. Additionally, Al Lamd was awarded second place for best integrated theatrical work.

H E Dr Hilal bin Abdullah Al Sinani, Oman’s Ambassador to Tunisia, attended the festival and said the international participation gave students an opportunity to exchange ideas, experience different theatrical traditions and develop their creative skills.

The Monastir appearance followed a strong domestic run for Al Lamd. The production won the award for Best Integrated Theatrical Performance at the eighth edition of the UTAS Theatre Festival in Nizwa in April, earning the Ibri branch the opportunity to represent the university and Oman in Tunisia.

At the Nizwa festival, Maram also won for best script, while Al Lamd received the award for best background music. Al Ghafri was among the actors given special jury recognition.

The Monastir festival, staged under the auspices of Tunisia’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, is one of the region’s established platforms for university theatre and cultural exchange.
