Muscat – Perched on the edge of Jabal Shams, Oman’s highest peak, Grand Canyon Domes is redefining mountain tourism by combining luxury accommodation with sustainability, community engagement and the dramatic beauty of one of the sultanate’s most iconic landscapes.

Overlooking the towering cliffs and deep valleys of Wadi Ghul – often referred to as the Grand Canyon of Arabia – the boutique retreat reflects the changing face of Oman’s tourism sector, where travellers are increasingly seeking authentic, nature-based experiences that leave a lighter environmental footprint.

The project is the vision of Omani entrepreneur Mohsen Khamis Sulaiman Al Khatri, who drew inspiration from the country’s diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage.

“My love for Oman’s nature was the inspiration behind this project,” Al Khatri said. “I wanted to create a destination where guests can enjoy the spectacular mountain landscape while experiencing the warmth of Omani hospitality and preserving the character of the place.”

Officially opened in October 2025 following months of planning and construction, the project was developed with an investment of around RO25,000.

The retreat currently features three luxury domes overlooking Wadi Ghul, each designed to blend into the surrounding mountain landscape while offering privacy, comfort and uninterrupted views. The accommodation can host between six and nine guests at a time, with expansion plans already under consideration to meet rising demand.

One of Jabal Shams’ greatest attractions is its climate. While temperatures in many parts of Oman exceed 45°C during the summer, the mountain offers a welcome escape, with daytime temperatures falling to around 23°C. The cooler weather, coupled with sweeping views and hiking opportunities, has made the destination increasingly popular with domestic and international visitors.

Beyond its accommodation, Grand Canyon Domes seeks to immerse guests in Omani culture. Traditional meals are prepared in partnership with members of nearby communities, giving visitors an authentic taste of mountain hospitality while creating new income opportunities for local families.

Sustainability has shaped every stage of the project’s development. The domes were carefully positioned and designed to minimise their environmental impact and integrate naturally with the rugged terrain, reflecting a broader commitment to protecting one of Oman’s most treasured natural environments.

“The success of tourism depends on preserving the natural environment that attracts visitors,” Al Khatri said. “Protecting these landscapes is essential for future generations.”

The emphasis on sustainability extends beyond environmental conservation. The retreat operates with a fully Omani workforce, with nationals overseeing both administrative and operational functions. It also works closely with local suppliers, artisans and service providers, generating direct and indirect economic opportunities for communities in the surrounding area.

The project expects to receive around 1,600 visitors annually, highlighting growing demand for boutique accommodation and eco-tourism experiences in Oman as travellers increasingly prioritise personalised stays over conventional hotel experiences.

For Al Khatri, Grand Canyon Domes represents more than a hospitality venture. It is a demonstration of how entrepreneurship can support Oman’s tourism ambitions while preserving the country’s natural and cultural heritage.

Al Khatri also encouraged young Omanis and investors to explore opportunities in the tourism sector by developing innovative projects that celebrate the country’s unique identity while balancing quality, sustainability and meaningful partnerships with local communities.
