New York-Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup 2026 champions on Sunday, claiming their second world title with a hard-fought 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final at New York New Jersey Stadium.

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute after the two sides remained deadlocked at 0-0 through 90 minutes, forcing the match into extra time. His strike proved enough to secure Spain’s first World Cup triumph since their historic success in South Africa in 2010.

Argentina were reduced to 10 men deep into stoppage time of the second half when midfielder Enzo Fernández was shown a red card in the 90+3rd minute. The dismissal disrupted Argentina’s midfield and allowed Spain to dominate possession and apply sustained pressure during extra time, eventually finding the breakthrough.

The victory gives Spain their second FIFA World Cup title, adding to their 2010 success, while Argentina remain on three world crowns, won in 1978, 1986 and 2022.

The final brought the curtain down on a landmark edition of the tournament, staged over five weeks across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The expanded competition featured 48 national teams for the first time in World Cup history and comprised 104 matches, making it the largest tournament ever held.
