Oman champions ozone protestation on International day

17 Sep 2025 Oman champions ozone protestation on International day

Muscat – The Sultanate of Oman, through the Environment Authority, joins the world in marking the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on September 16, under the theme From Science to Global Action. This global observance celebrates the pivotal role of scientific advancements in driving policies to safeguard the ozone layer, a vital shield protecting Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Oman’s commitment to ozone preservation is rooted in its adherence to the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol, formalised through Royal Decree No. 73/1998. The Sultanate has consistently aligned with all amendments, including the London, Copenhagen, Montreal, Beijing, and Kigali protocols, demonstrating its dedication to global environmental goals.

Since 2001, Oman has implemented robust policies and regulations, achieving significant milestones in phasing out ozone-depleting substances. By 2010, the consumption of halons and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) was eliminated, followed by the discontinuation of methyl bromide by 2015. Oman is also on track to meet the Montreal Protocol’s mandate for a 67.5% reduction in hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) by 2025, having already achieved reductions of 10% by 2015 and 35% by 2020.

In a recent stride toward sustainability, the Environment Authority partnered with the Oman Energy Association (OPAL) to establish professional competency standards in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector. This initiative promotes eco-friendly practices, aligning with Oman Vision 2040’s focus on environmental and climate sustainability.

Oman’s efforts extend to the third phase of the HCFC Phase-Out Strategy Project, executed in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). This phase emphasises training, public awareness, and regulatory updates to meet international standards.

As the first UN treaties universally ratified by all member states in 2009, the Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol underscore the power of global cooperation. Oman’s active participation in these frameworks reflects its leadership in environmental stewardship, contributing to healthier ecosystems and sustainable resource management worldwide.

Through legislation, capacity building, and international partnerships, Oman continues to play a vital role in protecting the ozone layer, ensuring a safer planet for future generations.
