Muscat – Oman Astronomical Society has been officially rebranded as Oman Society of Astronomy and Space, marking a major shift to broaden its scope and strengthen the sultanate’s position as a regional leader in astronomy and space research.
The transformation reflects the society’s commitment to fostering scientific advancements and contributing to the Oman Vision 2040 and the National Space Policy.
H H Sayyid Azzan bin Qais al Said, honorary president of the society, explained that the change in name aligns with the organisation’s future vision to expand its activities and contributions to both astronomy and space.
“It is in line with Oman Vision 2040, focusing on promoting scientific research and developing national expertise in space-related fields.”
He added that the society seeks leadership and excellence through the merger of Oman’s rich cultural heritage with cutting-edge scientific and technological advancements.
The rebranding aims to position the society as a central platform for innovation and scientific discovery in Oman’s astronomy and space sector. It will focus on achieving the goals of the National Space Policy and its Executive Programme 2023-33, with an emphasis on the diversification of economy, better scientific research, and development of national competencies in space exploration.
The society also aims to cultivate national expertise, promote space and astronomical education, and increase public awareness of space technologies’ role in sustainable development.
Additionally, the society plans to expand cooperation with national and international institutions to enhance Oman’s role in global space projects.
Ibrahim bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, vice president of the society, added that the latest transformation reflects their vision to enhance scientific activities and contribute to promoting space and astronomy in Oman.
“We aim to support space research, foster international cooperation, and lead Oman to global leadership in this advanced scientific field.”
Over the years, the society has made significant strides, including organising community initiatives like ‘World Space Week’, hosting international conferences, and participating in global space training programmes.
