Muscat residents demand more public facilities

1 Dec 2024 Muscat residents demand more public facilities

The recent National Day holiday drew massive crowds to Muscat’s beaches and parks, highlighting their popularity as recreational spots. What can be done to improve these facilities and provide more options for outdoor activities? Here’s what Muscat Daily readers said:

Ali al Maamari, Engineer

Muscat’s beaches and parks are some of our most treasured spots, but they can get overcrowded during holidays. To enhance the experience, we need more shaded seating areas, public washrooms, and designated barbecue zones. Activities like kayak rentals, volleyball courts, and jogging tracks would give families and youth more options for fun.

Salim al Harthy, University student

Muscat needs proper sports facilities in public parks, such as football nets or basketball courts. Interactive features like outdoor gym equipment and skate parks would be popular among young people. Concerts and food festivals could also be great additions.

KH Kumar, Retiree

I visited Seeb beach twice last month and noticed that it is poorly lit, with long stretches in darkness. Lighting needs to be improved. Also, many parks only open after 9am, which means they’re unavailable for morning walkers.

Priya Nair, Homemaker

As someone who loves spending time outdoors, I feel there’s room for improvement. Adding well-maintained cycling paths and playgrounds for children would make parks more family-friendly. Seasonal outdoor markets or food festivals could also provide entertainment for all age groups.

Aisha al Zadjali, Tutor

To cater to families and children, we could add picnic-friendly spaces and nature trails with informative signs about Oman’s flora and fauna. Installing water sports facilities like paddleboarding or jet skiing areas would attract more tourists. More public washrooms and designated barbecue spaces are also needed.

Ramesh Kumar, Software developer

Recreational areas would benefit from better lighting for evening use and improved parking spaces to handle large crowds. Setting up mobile food trucks or temporary kiosks selling snacks and drinks at reasonable prices near parks and beaches could enhance the visitor experience.
