NODC announces initiative to boost date farming

2 Jul 2022 By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Nakheel Oman Development Company (NODC) has launched a new initiative called ‘Ghars’ as part of its efforts to support Omani farmers and achieve self-sufficiency in food.

In a statement, NODC said that the initiative aims to sell date seedlings, called Al Fardh, to farmers and institutions through three chosen outlets – Agricultural Textile Centre in Bahla, Al Kamil wa al Wafi and Al Najd Farms.

The deadline for applications to get seedlings is October 22, the statement added.

NODC recently exported two shipments of dates to Singapore and India, keeping with the current efforts to increase the country’s national income by enhancing the global market of Omani products.

NODC confirmed that a consignment of Omani dates, packaged under the brand name ‘Zaad’, was exported recently.

The packaging, processing, marketing and export of the dates are being overseen by NODC, the investment arm of the One Million Date Palms Plantation Project of the Diwan of Royal Court.

The most important types of Omani dates are Khalas, Al Dhahirah, Fard, Khenizi Berni, Handal Bunarenga, Khasab, Straw, Umm al Sala, Majhoul, and Sukkari.
