Muscat – A unique community initiative by the Unicef Oman is inviting residents to ponder and make a personal commitment toward protecting children. Launched at Al Mouj Muscat on Wednesday, the campaign titled Waad (Promise) features a large interactive wall where visitors can write simple pledges dedicated to the wellbeing and rights of children.
The initiative marks the first time such a public promise wall has been introduced in Oman. The whiteboard installation, measuring 5m by 2m, will remain at Al Mouj until March 31 and is expected to attract hundreds of participants throughout the month.
Speaking about the event, Sara Al Lamki, partnerships and communications officer from Unicef Oman, said, “The idea goes beyond writing a simple note. It is not only a promise but a commitment that one makes — and a promise that you don’t break. The message is simple: to stay with the children. All children have the right to safety and education, especially in the times we live in today. We want children to grow without being affected by conflicts and to always have the right to security, health and education.”

Sara added that after March 31, the team plans to take the wall to other public indoor spaces so more people can participate in the initiative.
Visitors are encouraged to write short but meaningful promises — messages that reflect their personal commitment to children’s safety, education and wellbeing. The campaign also includes a digital version of the wall, allowing people to share their pledges online and expand the reach of the message.
Munazzah Seth, a social media influencer, described the event as deeply moving. She said, “This is the most touching event I have attended this Ramadan. Children have no role in wars and are often the victims. As adults, it will be our failure if we cannot protect them.”
Munazzah added that while major global decisions are taken at diplomatic tables, grassroots awareness campaigns — through community events, art and storytelling — can play a powerful role in evoking public conscience and encouraging leaders to think differently.
