Set for September 27, the festival promises more than just a night of chart-toppers. While Blinding Lights and Hips Don’t Lie are sure to get the crowds moving, the event’s spotlight is firmly on action — from expanding energy access in Africa to defending the Amazon rainforest and boosting education for children worldwide.

The all-star lineup also features rising talents Tyla, Ayra Starr, and Mariah the Scientist, with Hugh Jackman hosting the evening. And unlike your average concert, this one’s free — but with a twist. Fans earn their tickets by taking action through the Global Citizen app. Think recording videos calling on world leaders or mentoring youth — activism with a playlist.

Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans says the artists’ connection to communities overcoming poverty adds weight to the mission. “They bring perspective into Central Park at a moment when the world needs unity now more than ever,” he told AP.

So, what’s on the festival’s to-do list? Deliver clean energy to a million people in Africa. Raise $200mn to help indigenous leaders protect a stretch of the Amazon the size of Italy. And secure $30mn to support literacy programmes for kids. Big goals — but with big names behind them.

This isn’t The Weeknd’s first philanthropic tour stop — he’s donating $1 from every concert ticket to the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. Shakira, meanwhile, is no stranger to using her voice offstage. “Music has always been my way of connecting with people and leaving a mark on the world,” she said. “I can’t wait to perform, unite, and inspire action.”
