15 Aug 2022

Muscat – Simplifying science for the layman and encouraging scientific thinking is something that comes naturally to Prof Haider Ahmed Jaffar al Lawati from Sultan Qaboos University.

Prof Lawati has taken upon himself the responsibility of simplifying science and communicating with the public through social media platforms, his Twitter account in particular, to share his scientific insights.

He holds myths responsible for impeding development of societies and the reason behind some individuals resorting to illogical ways to find solutions for the challenges faced in life.

“Deviation from correct scientific thinking and sound analysis does not allow them to find practical solutions to meet these challenges.”

One of the reasons for the absence of correct scientific thinking in society, he noted, is the lack of understanding of correct scientific concepts. “This is why simplifying science and linking it to the daily reality of life is vital,” he said.

Prof Lawati stressed that simplifying scientific concepts plays an important in making science appealing to young people.

He emphasised the role of researchers in actively encouraging scientific thinking. “A skilled researcher is able to simplify scientific concepts and share the results of their research with the community through various available means.”

Prof Lawati has a dedicated Twitter account – Sciences from Al – through which he strives to frequently tweet on matters related to science, in addition to publishing scientific articles periodically.
He presented a radio programme ‘Tales of Science’ last Ramadan, in which he dealt with various scientific concepts. He has also published a book titled ‘The Wonders of Science’, in which he presents a number of scientific concepts in a simple manner.

“Simplifying science is a great way to deliver knowledge to all segments of society in order to build a conscious person and a society enlightened by science.”
