Muscat – Omani photographer Abdul Rahman Ali al Hinai has captured colourful and lively images of Eid habtas in several wilayats of North Sharqiyah and South Sharqiyah.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Hinai said, “I started taking pictures of Eid habtas more than 30 years ago. I have clicked hundreds of photos documenting Omani traditions and spread cultural awareness in society.”

With his pack on his back and armed with cameras, Hinai has been travelling around Oman before Eid. “A few days ago, I was alerted of the Eid al Adha habta in Al Qabel and Al Thabit where I captured some great moments of children enjoying the traditional markets.”

He informed that shopping in these markets is a tradition for many Omanis. “I make an effort to showcase the country’s beauty and diversity to the world through photos of habtas.”

Omanis flock to habtas, daytime market places peculiar to their respective governorates. These present opportunities to livestock breeders, who turn out in large numbers to sell goat, sheep, cattle or camel that are highly sought after during Eid. Auctioning is the most common style of trade in these markets.

Habtas are a memorable experience for all Omanis, but more so for children who revel in choosing games, garments and sweets such as halwa. “The markets come alive just days before Eid al Fitr and Eid al Adha, providing all the items needed for these religious holidays.”

Besides livestock, toys and sweets, fruits, vegetables and clothes are also available in these markets.
