Clean and green, tourist dream

18 Oct 2026 Tourist facilities in Oman By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Which tourist places in Oman need better services, and what facilities or services are missing? Here’s what Muscat Daily readers said –

Ahmed al Balushi, Tourism professional

Wadi Shab is one of Oman’s most beautiful destinations, but facilities could be improved to make visits safer and more comfortable. Better changing rooms, clean public toilets, drinking-water points and clear signboards would help tourists. There should also be trained lifeguards or safety personnel during busy periods, along with improved parking and waste collection to protect the natural environment.

Jebel Shams attracts many visitors, but more organised services would improve the experience, particularly for families and older people. Clean toilets, designated rest areas, reliable mobile connectivity and emergency assistance are important. Clear information about hiking trails, weather conditions and safety precautions should also be available. Better waste management and responsible tourism awareness would help preserve the mountain’s natural beauty.

Sulaiman al Maawali, Tour guide

The historic areas of Nizwa and other traditional towns need more visitor-friendly facilities. Tourists would benefit from multilingual information boards, guided heritage walks, public toilets and convenient parking near popular attractions. More shops selling authentic local products and cafés offering Omani food could support small businesses. Better online information about opening hours, events and transport would also make planning easier.

The coastal areas around Ras Al Hadd and Ras Al Jinz offer wonderful experiences, but visitors need more convenient facilities. Clean restrooms, shaded waiting areas, drinking water and clear directions would make trips more comfortable. Better public transport and affordable accommodation options would help independent travellers. Visitors should also receive clear guidance on protecting turtle nesting sites and avoiding disturbance to wildlife.

I’d say Wadi Shab deserves better facilities. At present the site has few clean toilets and changing rooms, almost no shaded rest areas or drinking water points along the walk and almost no multilingual signs, safety guidance on swimming or trained lifeguards, which is worrying as visitor numbers grow. Simple additions such as waste bins, a first-aid post, affordable food stalls run by people from nearby villages and a regulated boat service with fixed prices would improve comfort and safety while creating local jobs. With these steps, Wadi Shab can keep its natural charm and offer the hospitality Oman is known for.

All beaches in Oman should have better public facilities, including clean toilets, proper changing rooms and shower facilities. Separate changing areas for men and women would provide privacy and comfort. These facilities would help visitors wash off seawater and sand, maintain hygiene, and make Oman’s beautiful beaches more comfortable and enjoyable for families and tourists.

Most of the popular beaches lack basic changing facilities or even toilets. Little changes can go a long way in maintaining the natural beauty of these tourist hotspots.

Many tourist spots in Oman, particularly Jabal Shams, Jabal Akhdar and popular wadis like Wadi Shab, require upgraded public restrooms, expanded parking infrastructure, enhanced waste management and clearer emergency signage to support growing visitor numbers.

Nakhal and Hujrat al Sheikh walking areas are still underrated. Both need more simple seating and parking arrangements and washroom maintenance for weekends when they are crowded.

Make roads for all cars. Many tourist places in Oman require 4WD. Due to this, most people can’t go there. I think better roads can make all tourists reach and explore the beauty of Oman. Oman tourism should not be available only for 4WD owners.
