Muscat – Oman will compete in 10 sports at the 20th Asian Games in Japan next month, fielding athletes across disciplines ranging from athletics and shooting to cricket and sailing as it prepares for one of Asia’s biggest sporting events.

The Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games will run from September 19 to October 4, bringing together athletes from across the continent in 43 sports.

The Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) said the national delegation will compete in athletics, taekwondo, shooting, hockey, golf, fencing, cricket, weightlifting, sailing and beach volleyball.

Based on the team numbers announced by OOC, more than 60 Omani athletes are set to compete, backed by coaches, technical officials and medical and administrative staff.

Athletics will have one of Oman’s largest contingents, comprising eight men and three women. They will compete in events including the 100m and 200m, men’s and mixed 4x100m relays, high jump, long jump, triple jump and hammer throw from September 24 to 29.

The cricket squad will feature 15 players and compete from September 24 to October 3, while the hockey team will begin its campaign on September 18, a day before the Games formally open, and continue until October 3.

Oman will also field eight shooters – six men and two women – in skeet, trap, air pistol and rifle events. The shooting programme will run from September 20 to October 1.

Seven fencers, including three women, will compete in individual and team foil and épée events, while three weightlifters will take part in the 75kg, 85kg and 95kg categories.

Beach volleyball will be represented by four players, while four sailors will compete in the 49er class.

Oman will have one competitor each in golf and taekwondo, with the latter taking part in the men’s -58kg category.

Mohammed bin Hamad Al Rahbi will serve as Chef de Mission, with Hanaa bint Said Al Battashi as deputy. The delegation will also include administrators, medical and physiotherapy staff, a safeguarding officer and media personnel.

OOC said preparations were continuing to complete logistical and administrative arrangements and ensure athletes and technical teams were ready for the continental competition.

The Asian Games will be staged across venues in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya, as well as selected locations elsewhere in Japan.

The programme ranges from traditional Olympic sports such as athletics, swimming, boxing and gymnastics to cricket, esports, martial arts and other disciplines popular across Asia.

Aichi-Nagoya 2026 will mark the third time Japan has hosted the Asian Games, following Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994.

For Oman, participation across 10 disciplines offers athletes both a chance to challenge for continental honours and gain experience against some of Asia’s strongest competitors ahead of future regional and international events.
