Muscat – Nakhal Sports Club etched its name into Omani chess history after winning the 2026 Omani Clubs Chess Championship for the first time, ending the tournament with an impressive record of eight victories from nine rounds.

The championship, which featured 24 clubs from across the sultanate, was one of the strongest editions of the competition since its launch in 2018. Nakhal’s consistent performances throughout the tournament secured the club’s maiden national title and established it as Oman’s top club chess team for 2026.

The title is regarded as a landmark achievement for Nakhal Sports Club, reflecting years of investment in player development, technical preparation and long-term planning.

The championship-winning team comprised Magdy Medhat, Rashid Al Jabri, Mohammed Khalfan Al Saidi, Emad Al Balushi and Qusay Al Hinai, who delivered disciplined performances throughout the nine-round competition.

Coach Magdy Medhat, an Egyptian chess trainer who also coaches the Indian School Bousher (ISB) chess team and serves as head coach of Chess Masters Academy, was credited with playing a key role in the team’s success. His strategic preparation, game analysis and player development helped Nakhal overcome some of the country’s strongest clubs.

Club officials also acknowledged the support of Saeed Al Kindi and Ahmed Al Jabri, whose management and planning ensured the team had the resources needed throughout the championship.

The club’s Board of Directors, headed by Dr Ahmed Al Riyami, was also recognised for its continued backing of chess and other sporting disciplines, with its long-term vision contributing to the club’s breakthrough success.

The victory is expected to provide fresh momentum for chess development in Nakhal and encourage more young players to take up the sport. It also reflects the growing standard of competitive chess in Oman, where participation by clubs, schools and academies has increased steadily in recent years.

For Nakhal Sports Club, the historic triumph marks the beginning of a new chapter, with the club aiming to build on its success by nurturing emerging talent and competing for further national and regional honours.
