Muscat – Experts and researchers have called for greater efforts to promote a culture of constructive dialogue among young people, saying meaningful communication is essential for building an informed, tolerant and resilient generation capable of navigating an increasingly complex world.

“Effective communication skills are developed through practice and continuous engagement rather than theory alone,” said Nabeela bint Farouq Al Busaidi, a communication and public speaking trainer. “Active listening, asking open-ended questions and paraphrasing others’ viewpoints are among the most practical ways to improve dialogue and understanding.”

She said one of the biggest challenges facing young people is managing emotions during disagreements. Encouraging them to distinguish between an opinion and the person expressing it helps create an environment based on mutual respect and constructive engagement.

Specialists noted that dialogue has evolved beyond the simple exchange of views to become a powerful tool for strengthening social cohesion, encouraging critical thinking and fostering mutual respect, particularly as societies undergo rapid social and technological change.

“Young people today are among the most influential drivers of social and cultural transformation,” Nabeela said. “Constructive dialogue enables them to express their opinions responsibly, appreciate different perspectives and contribute positively to society.”

Dr Sabra bint Saif Al Harasi, a researcher at the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, described dialogue as a fundamental human value rooted in recognising and respecting others.

“Islamic teachings place significant emphasis on communication based on wisdom, kindness and respectful exchange,” she said. “Societies that cultivate dialogue are better equipped to manage differences, preserve stability and develop balanced solutions to contemporary challenges.”

Sabra stressed the importance of creating safe spaces for discussion within families, schools and universities, saying such environments help young people express their views with confidence and responsibility.

Experts also pointed to Oman’s long-standing tradition of moderation, tolerance and balanced discourse, saying these values have contributed significantly to social harmony and peaceful coexistence. Respectful dialogue and mutual understanding, they noted, remain defining characteristics of Omani society.

Social researcher Sultan bin Thani Al Hasani said dialogue has become increasingly important in an era dominated by digital communication and social media.

“Meaningful discussions encourage young people to analyse issues critically, move beyond emotional reactions and embrace evidence-based thinking,” he said. “This strengthens self-confidence and enhances their ability to contribute positively to society.”

Al Hasani added that digital platforms have expanded opportunities for interaction and exposure to diverse cultures and experiences, helping reinforce values of tolerance, coexistence and acceptance of others.

Researchers said the ability to engage in respectful dialogue often reflects an individual’s awareness and understanding, enabling people to discuss differing views objectively and focus on common interests rather than divisions.

They added that investing in dialogue is ultimately an investment in society’s future, helping develop a generation capable of addressing challenges with confidence, responsibility and a spirit of cooperation.
