Muscat – The Environment Authority (EA) has invited investors and specialised operators to apply for a new investment opportunity to manage and operate the Dimaniyat Islands Nature Reserve, as part of efforts to attract investment and strengthen private sector participation in environmental and eco-tourism projects in the sultanate.

In a statement, the authority said the initiative aims to introduce a competitive model for managing the protected marine site in line with international best practices in sustainability and environmental tourism.

The EA will select a qualified operator with the technical expertise and experience to manage the reserve under an integrated framework that preserves its unique environmental and aesthetic value. The selected operator will also be responsible for regulating marine activities in accordance with the reserve’s approved capacity.

According to the authority, the project will include the development of innovative sustainability initiatives such as the creation of artificial coral reefs and the launch of educational and awareness programmes for visitors. The plan also encourages the use of clean energy solutions, environmentally friendly infrastructure and modern monitoring technologies to enhance the management and protection of the reserve.

Visitor numbers to the reserve rose to 96,625 in 2024, compared to 71,263 in 2023, reflecting the growing popularity of one of Oman’s most important eco-tourism destinations.

Located off the coast of Muscat, the reserve comprises nine main islands and continues to attract nature enthusiasts, divers and researchers interested in its rich marine biodiversity and pristine natural environment.

The protected area spans approximately 203sqkm, covering both terrestrial and marine zones, and is home to diverse ecosystems including coral reefs, sea turtles, seabirds and a wide variety of fish species.

Known for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral habitats, the reserve has become a key destination for sustainable tourism in Oman while also serving as an important site for scientific research and environmental conservation.

The authority said proposals will be evaluated based on technical, environmental and financial criteria to ensure the selection of the most efficient and sustainable offer. Last date for submission of papers is May 3.
