Muscat – Two Omani photographers have claimed first place at the 17th edition of the international photography competition ‘Date Palm Tree Through the Eyes of the World’, organised by the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation under the Erth Zayed Philanthropies Foundation of the UAE Presidential Court.

Hamad Al Ghanboosi won first place in the ‘Date Palm Tree’ category, while Majid Al Amri took top honours in the ‘Humans and the Date Palm’ category, marking a strong Omani showing in the contest.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Al Amri said his award-winning photograph captures a tradition rooted in the annual date season, taken during the 2025 Tabseel season in Bidiyah, North Sharqiyah.

“Tabseel is not simply about harvesting dates — it is a celebration,” he said. “Families gather early in the morning and continue working together until sunset. Everyone takes part, from elders to young people, making it a tradition that strengthens family and community bonds.”

Al Amri said the image documents an authentic moment from the traditional date-processing season, reflecting practices passed down through generations. “Through photography, I try to document the customs of our fathers and grandfathers and share them with younger generations, so they understand the importance of preserving our heritage,” he said.

Al Amri added that visual storytelling plays a crucial role in safeguarding cultural identity.

Al Ghanboosi said his winning photograph was taken at sunset among date palm groves in Jaalan Bani Bu Ali in South Sharqiyah, capturing the natural beauty of the palms against the light of the setting sun.

“Winning first place will motivate me to continue developing my photography and participate in more international competitions,” he said, adding that Oman’s landscapes and agricultural heritage offer photographers endless inspiration.

The 2026 edition of the competition attracted 54 photographers from 17 countries, who submitted 276 photographs reflecting diverse artistic perspectives on the cultural, environmental and symbolic importance of the date palm.

Both photographers expressed their ambition to continue capturing images that showcase the sultanate’s heritage and landscapes to global audiences, and encouraged young Omanis to pursue their passions with dedication.
