Muscat – Public Prosecution has issued a strict advisory regarding the misuse of digital media platforms, specifically targeting the exploitation of children and domestic workers for online views and engagement.

Authorities emphasise that a child’s early life is not fleeting content for public consumption, and what is posted today may negatively impact their future tomorrow. Furthermore, content creators are strongly cautioned against turning domestic workers into subjects for media views or exposing young minds to terrifying and violent material that can leave a lasting psychological impact.

Under the provisions outlined in Article 36/7 of the law on Combating Cybercrimes, issued by Royal Decree Number 61/2026, specific acts have been classified as serious criminal offences.

This legislation explicitly penalises anyone who exploits a child under the age of 15 years, or a domestic worker, in media content in a negative manner. Additionally, publishing material that promotes violence or excessive horror to children is strictly prohibited.

Violators face severe legal repercussions, including imprisonment for a duration of 3 years, a financial fine amounting to RO 5000, or both of these penalties combined.

Citizens and residents are urged to exercise high levels of responsibility and mindfulness when creating digital content to safeguard the welfare and dignity of vulnerable members of society.
