Mudhaibi – Grape cultivation in North Sharqiyah has recorded remarkable growth, reinforcing its emergence as one of Oman’s most promising agricultural industries.

Speaking on the sector’s development, Saud bin Saif Al Maawali, Wali of Mudhaibi, said the total area under grape cultivation has expanded from just 27 acres to 162 acres, representing an impressive growth rate of 492%. “This rapid expansion has helped establish the governorate as Oman’s Grape Capital.”

Al Maawali noted that more than 14,000 grape seedlings were planted across the governorate in 2025, while plans are in place to plant over 50,000 additional seedlings in 2026. The strong growth, he said, reflects increasing confidence among farmers and investors in the commercial potential of grape cultivation.

He highlighted the flagship model grape farm project in Ibra, which is being developed over an area of 200 acres. Once fully operational, the project is expected to produce around 2,000 tonnes of grapes annually and generate economic returns exceeding RO3mn.

The wali also revealed that new investment opportunities covering more than 100 acres are being offered in several wilayats across the governorate. These opportunities are designed to attract investors and entrepreneurs to develop an integrated grape industry encompassing cultivation, marketing, agricultural processing, agritourism and value-added activities.

Al Maawali said the expansion of the sector will strengthen its contribution to the local economy, create new employment and investment opportunities, and support Oman’s broader food security objectives.
