OADC expands support for ginger and turmeric farmers in Dhofar

31 May 2026 OADC expands support for ginger and turmeric farmers in Dhofar

Salalah – Oman Agriculture Development Company (OADC), in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources and in partnership with Omani farmers, has continued purchasing locally cultivated turmeric and ginger from farms across Dhofar for the 2026 season as part of efforts to strengthen food security and support sustainable agriculture.

The initiative is part of a wider programme aimed at localising the cultivation of high-value crops and enhancing the competitiveness of Omani agricultural products in local and international markets.

By directly purchasing harvests from farmers, OADC is seeking to establish stable marketing channels for local producers while encouraging the expansion of turmeric and ginger cultivation across the governorate.

Dhofar’s climate and fertile soil have made several wilayats, including Dhalkut, Mirbat, Sadah and Rakhyut, suitable for cultivating the two crops, which are witnessing rising demand in food processing, health products and cosmetics industries.

According to figures released for the 2026 season, turmeric production exceeded 98,447kg, while ginger production reached 468kg. The programme benefited around 78 farms, reflecting growing farmer participation and increasing confidence in the project’s economic potential.

The harvested produce is being supplied through Silal Central Market for Fruits and Vegetables, helping improve consumer access to locally grown products and strengthening the presence of Omani agricultural goods in retail outlets.

OADC stated that the initiative underlines the role of cooperation between the public and private sectors in advancing the agricultural sector and supporting farmers to adopt commercially viable crops with strong market demand.

The company added that it will continue working with farmers and relevant authorities to improve productivity, enhance crop quality and support agricultural sustainability in line with Oman Vision 2040 objectives.

The project also reflects broader efforts to diversify the national economy and enhance self-sufficiency in selected food and commercial crops through targeted agricultural investments.
