Beat the heat, protect workers on the street

10 May 2026 Oman midday work ban effectiveness By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Muscat – Is the midday work ban during summer effective in protecting outdoor workers? What more should be done? Here is what Muscat Daily readers said –

Muna Basheer Al Zadjali, Private sector employee

The midday work ban during summer is effective in protecting outdoor workers from extreme heat and health risks. It helps reduce heat exhaustion and improves safety at construction sites. However, more should be done, such as providing shaded rest areas, enough drinking water, regular health checks and stricter inspections to ensure companies follow the rules properly.

The midday work ban in Oman during the summer months plays an important role in protecting outdoor workers from extreme heat. By restricting work during peak noon hours, it helps reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses and ensures safer working conditions. While the policy is widely appreciated, continued monitoring and strict enforcement are essential to make it fully effective. Providing shaded rest areas, ample washing and clean drinking water, entertainment intervals, emergency health care kits, and awareness to strengthen worker safety and wellbeing can boost their spirit. A worker can work hard if provided a conducive environment and working conditions.

The summer midday work ban effectively protects outdoor workers by reducing risks of heatstroke, dehydration and exhaustion, while setting clear legal safety standards. However, stronger enforcement, heat-index based rules, random inspections, worker hotlines and broader safeguards for delivery riders, cleaners, gardeners and informal workers are needed as temperatures continue to rise.

Salim Al Harthy, Businessman

The midday work ban is definitely effective in reducing heat-related illnesses among outdoor workers. During peak summer, temperatures in Oman can be dangerous, so this rule helps save lives. However, stricter monitoring is needed to ensure companies comply. Authorities should also introduce shaded rest areas, hydration stations and awareness campaigns so workers fully understand heat risks.

Ayesha Al Balushi, Homemaker

I believe the midday ban is a very important step, especially given Oman’s extreme summer climate. It shows concern for worker welfare. Still, enforcement can be inconsistent in smaller companies. More inspections and penalties are necessary. Additionally, providing cooling shelters, medical check-ups and flexible working hours would further improve safety and protect workers’ health.

Rajesh Kumar, Private sector employee

The midday work ban is helpful, but on the ground, not all companies follow it strictly. Many workers still feel pressured to continue working. Stronger enforcement and anonymous complaint systems would help. Employers should also provide proper hydration, cooling vests and regular breaks. Education about heatstroke symptoms is equally important for workers to protect themselves.

Suresh Nair, Accountant

The ban has made a positive difference, especially compared to earlier years when workers had no protection. However, more can be done. Authorities could introduce wearable heat sensors and mandate shaded workspaces. Companies should adjust project timelines during summer. Worker accommodation conditions also need improvement to ensure proper recovery after long hours in the heat.
