3 May 2026 Dubai launches Metro Blue Line Project to reshape urban transport By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Dubai – Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai has officially inaugurated the start of tunnel drilling operations for the Dubai Metro Blue Line. This ambitious 30 km expansion, half of which is constructed underground, features 14 iconic stations designed to serve approximately one million people. The project is expected to significantly improve urban mobility by reducing traffic congestion in Dubai by an estimated 20%.

A dedicated workforce of 10,000 employees and engineers is currently working to meet the scheduled opening date of September 9, 2029. With a budget of Dh20.5bn allocated for the Blue Line and an additional Dh34bn planned for the future Gold Line, Dubai continues its journey to host what is described as the newest and most beautiful metro system globally. These transport initiatives are part of a broader strategy to reshape “New Dubai,” alongside other major projects such as the new international airport and a refreshed international financial centre.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the leadership is focusing on digital transformation and AI-integrated government services to ensure Dubai remains the world’s most future-ready city. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid noted that these ongoing developments, including upcoming projects to be launched in the coming months, prove that those who bet on Dubai are betting on the future. The Blue Line project remains a cornerstone of this vision, providing seamless connectivity through 15.5 km of underground tunnels and 14.5 km of elevated tracks.
