Switzerland – Following the conclusion of the initial round of high-level negotiations in Switzerland, mediators from Qatar and Pakistan have reported significant advancements in the diplomatic process between the United States and Iran. The discussions, held at the Bürgenstock resort, were conducted in a positive and constructive atmosphere, setting a trajectory for continued engagement throughout the week.

Key developments emerging from the talks include:

  • Establishment of a Roadmap: Both nations have agreed upon a formal roadmap with the objective of reaching a definitive final agreement within 60 days.
  • High-Level Oversight: To ensure the effective implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding, a high-level committee has been established to provide political oversight, supported by specific working groups focused on nuclear issues and sanctions.
  • Regional De-escalation: A “de-confliction cell” has been created, involving the US, Iran, and the Lebanese Republic, with the specific mandate to ensure the termination of military operations in Lebanon.
  • Maritime Security: A direct communication line has been formed between the parties to facilitate the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Sanctions Relief: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Iran has secured waivers for oil and petrochemical exports, the release of certain frozen assets, and the initiation of a comprehensive reconstruction and development plan.

Despite the progress, the Iranian delegation noted that technical teams will remain in Switzerland to continue discussions on the remaining clauses necessary for the final negotiations, whilst emphasizing the need for the effective implementation of all commitments.
