New Delhi/Islamabad – After days of strikes and counter-strikes, India and Pakistan have agreed to a ‘full and immediate’ ceasefire.
Officials from Islamabad and New Delhi confirmed the development minutes after US President Donald Trump posted the announcement on his Truth Social network, as the conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbours appeared to be spiralling towards a full-blown war.
“After a long night of talks mediated by the US, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence,” Trump posted.
Oman welcomed the ceasefire, stressing the importance of regional security and stability.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said both sides would “stop all firing and military action on land, air and sea” with effect from Saturday 1130 GMT.
In a statement on X, Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!”
An Indian government source told AFP that the ceasefire has been worked out bilaterally, “directly between the two countries”.
Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India and Pakistan had reached an understanding and that New Delhi would maintain a firm line against terrorism. “India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action,” he wrote on X.
“India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so.”
Violations were reported from both sides within hours of the ceasefire announcement.
