14 Apr 2025

Qalhat – A promotional sports march was held in the historic city of Qalhat, attracting more than 350 participants, as part of efforts to highlight the region’s archaeological and tourism appeal.

The event, which featured a guided trail through the city’s most important landmarks, was organised by the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s branch in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, in collaboration with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.

The initiative aimed to raise awareness of the archaeological treasures of Qalhat and support the growth of the tourism sector in the governorate. Participants, including local residents and visitors, explored the ancient village while learning about its historical and cultural significance.

The march was held under the patronage of Dr Suhaim bint Ahmed al Harthi, Member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors and Head of the Tourism Committee, and witnessed a notable turnout, reflecting strong interest in heritage-based tourism experiences.

Organisers stated that the event demonstrated how sports and tourism can be effectively combined to promote cultural heritage, with the march serving as both an educational and recreational experience for those in attendance.

Qalhat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was once a thriving port city and holds a special place in Oman’s history, making it an ideal setting for initiatives that blend physical activity with cultural exploration.
