Art for change

16 Jan 2025 By MOHAMMED TAHA

Muscat – Farah al Harthy and Aseel al Ghabshi, two talented artists from Barka, have been close friends for many years, united by a deep passion for drawing and painting.

Over the last three years, they have channeled their creative energy into a remarkable artistic project that blends their love for art with the beauty of Oman’s landscapes and cultural heritage. Through live painting sessions, Farah and Aseel not only capture the breathtaking scenery of their homeland but also celebrate Oman’s rich traditions and vibrant tourism scene. The collaboration of this artistic duo has evolved into a dynamic initiative that highlights the country’s natural wonders while fostering a deeper appreciation for its cultural identity.

Muscat Daily had the chance to meet the duo while they were working on a live painting at the Heritage Village in Naseem Garden, a location where they have become well-known for their outdoor art exhibitions. These public spaces have often served as a backdrop for their live painting sessions, with their artwork attracting visitors from all walks of life.

Reflecting on the beginning of their artistic journey, Aseel al Ghabshi said, “Farah and I started doing live art in public parks about three years ago. Our first painting was created in Barka Public Park in 2022, and it met with such positive feedback from visitors that it inspired us to continue working outdoors. Since then, we’ve painted at various locations, including parks, beaches, and major events like Muscat Nights.”

To date, the artists have completed more than 30 live paintings, each one capturing the beauty of Oman’s landscapes, wildlife, and culture. Their works often feature Oman’s natural wonders, such as mountains, valleys, as well as endangered species like the Arabian leopard. They also depict local people and traditions, besides portraits of significant Omani leaders like the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said and His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.

Discussing the philosophy behind their project, Farah explained, “We’ve named our project simply ‘Art.’ Before we begin each painting, we sit down to plan. We discuss the message we want to convey, the colours we’ll use, and the purpose behind it. For us, art is more than just aesthetics, it’s about sending a message of humanity, national pride, and community service. Our artwork aims to contribute to the development of society and reflect our collective values.”

Among their most notable works is a piece titled ‘Palestine’, which they’ve painted in public spaces across Oman for over a year as a gesture of solidarity with the people of Gaza. Farah adds, “We continue to paint this piece as a call for peace and a show of support for Gaza, hoping to raise awareness and encourage unity through art.”

In addition to promoting Oman’s beauty as a tourist destination, Farah and Aseel are driven by humanitarian goals. “We want our paintings to tell the story of Oman as a land of culture, history, and natural beauty,” Aseel said. “Our goal is to promote Oman not only as a tourist spot but also as a place that is rich in cultural traditions.”

Looking toward the future, Farah and Aseel have ambitious plans. They hope to establish their own art studio where they can continue creating, showcasing their works, and even collaborate with other artists. “We dream of having a space where we can bring together all our pieces and also give other artists a platform to share their creativity,” said Aseel.

Farah and Aseel are also keen to inspire the next generation of artists, particularly young girls in Oman. “We encourage young Omanis, especially girls, to believe in their talents and pursue their dreams. It’s important to work hard, never give up, and face challenges with determination,” Farah asserts.

Both artists hope their live painting exhibitions continue to brighten public spaces across Oman while also serving as a reminder of the power of art to unite people and bring about positive changes in society.

“Art has the power to connect us, inspire us, and push us toward a better future,” Farah added.
