Ibra – Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, in collaboration with a mission from Italy’s University of Naples, has unearthed pottery pieces dating back to the Iron Age in Wadi Bani Khalid, North Sharqiyah.

In a statement, the ministry said the pieces were found during the third season of an archaeological excavation at the Aqar Zaida site in Wadi Bani Khalid which dates to the Late Iron Age.

Excavations focused on a building site (WBK1) and initiated work in a new area (WBK49). The findings include multiple pottery pieces, fragments and a large pottery jar.

The excavation efforts reflect the ministry’s commitment to preserving Oman’s cultural heritage, while emphasising the importance of such missions in showcasing the rich history and identity of the sultanate.

On October 13, the Embassy of Italy in Muscat, in collaboration with the ministry, Oman Across Ages Museum and Sultan Qaboos University, hosted a symposium at the museum.

Part of the 24th Italian Language Week, the event highlighted the theme ‘Italian and the Book: The World Between the Lines’. It celebrated the connection between Italian literature and heritage while emphasising Oman’s commitment to preserving its cultural legacy.

Italian and Omani experts shared insights on joint efforts in archaeology and heritage conservation, showcasing how Italy’s expertise supports Oman in protecting its historical sites.
