Muscat – Omani athletes showcased exceptional skill and determination at the Balkan Open Taekwondo WT Cup 2024, held in Romania from November 30 to December 1. Competing against 500 participants from 48 countries, the team secured six medals, including three gold, one silver, and two bronze, marking a significant achievement on the global taekwondo stage.

The event featured strong competitors from nations such as the US, the UK, Egypt, Australia, India, Japan, Germany, France, and Sweden. Oman’s athletes stood out with their disciplined performances, earning praise from both organisers and rivals.

Speaking to Muscat Daily coach Hareb al Abdali expressed immense pride in the team’s accomplishments. “Our athletes have made Oman proud with their determination and success. This performance not only brings honour to our country but also enhances Oman’s reputation in the international taekwondo community,” he said. He noted that the experience gained in the tournament would inspire the athletes to aim for further milestones.

Among the standout achievements, Fidaa al Barwaniya was named Best Player of the Tournament, and coach Salem al Abri received the Best Coach Award, underscoring the team’s overall excellence.

Gold medals were won by Nibras al Tawqi in the Men’s Under-54kg category, Fidaa al Barwaniya in the Youth Under-52kg category, and Hilal al Rashidi in the Junior Under-49kg category. Saleh al Rashidi claimed silver in the Junior Under-45kg category, while bronze medals were earned by Mohammed Adnan al Habsi in the Youth Under-63kg category and Mustafa al Balushi in the Youth Under-51kg category.

Coach Abdali highlighted the need for greater financial support from the private sector to ensure the team’s continued participation in international tournaments. “Sustained investment in developing our athletes is essential for future success and for strengthening Oman’s presence on the global sports stage,” he said.

The team’s achievements reflect not only their dedication but also Oman’s growing stature in the world of taekwondo. The triumph in Romania sets a high standard for the nation’s athletes as they prepare for upcoming international competitions.
