Sur – The National Museum’s exhibition Sur in the Memory of Postage Stamps is a captivating tribute to Sur, recently chosen as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2024. Officially inaugurated on Sunday under the patronage of Dr. Yahya bin Badr al Maawali, Governor of South Sharqiyah, the exhibition will run until November 14, 2024. This unique showcase presents a rich tapestry of history, offering visitors an immersive journey through postage stamps that celebrate Sur’s invaluable contributions to Oman’s cultural and historical legacy.

Curated by Mr. Abdullah bin Said al Saa’di, an Arabic language school supervisor and a dedicated member of the Friends of Oman Museums, the exhibition highlights 16 different themes. Each stamp on display reflects key moments in Oman’s past, particularly Sur’s significance in maritime history, cultural artistry, and sustainable practices. This carefully selected collection illustrates Sur’s enduring impact, revealing its past achievements, its connection to Oman’s heritage, and its role in shaping the identity of the region.

One of the exhibit’s standout pieces is the 1996 stamp series featuring traditional Omani ships. This collection commemorates Sur’s legacy as a pivotal center for shipbuilding and maritime navigation, echoing the city’s historical prominence along the Indian Ocean trade routes. Another notable stamp, the Suri Dagger issue from March 19, 2001, embodies Sur’s cultural craftsmanship, reflecting the artistry and heritage that the region is known for. The Omani Aflaj stamp, which celebrates Oman’s ancient water management systems, also has special significance as it highlights Falaj al-Jeela, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This system is emblematic of Sur’s role in sustainable water management, a practice deeply rooted in Omani heritage.

Further emphasizing Sur’s intellectual heritage, the exhibition includes the 2023 Alphabet of Omani Scripting stamp, which showcases Oman’s commitment to preserving and promoting its literary and documentation heritage. Also on display is the Omani Manuscripts stamp, featuring Madin al-Asrar fi Uloom al-Bihar, a manuscript by the Suri navigator Nasser bin Ali al-Khudouri. This stamp reflects the city’s deep maritime knowledge and highlights its historical contributions to Oman’s navigation and exploration achievements.

In her opening speech, Dr. Fatima bint Mohammed al Balushi, Director General of Museums Affairs at the National Museum, emphasized the role of postage stamps as cultural symbols. “This exhibition reminds us of an era when postage stamps served as symbols of communication, each holding profound meanings tied to their origin and issue date,” she noted. She praised Mr. Abdullah bin Said al Saa’di’s collection, which effectively chronicles Sur’s landmarks and historical milestones, adding that the stamps are “graceful ambassadors” of Omani heritage and history.

Dr. Al-Balushi also took the opportunity to highlight the National Museum’s Friends of Oman Museums membership card, which offers exclusive benefits for those seeking a closer connection with Oman’s cultural institutions. The card provides free admission, access to special museum events, opportunities for training in museum-related industries, and even the possibility of organizing personal exhibitions. This membership aims to foster a deeper connection between Omanis and their history, encouraging active engagement with the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Mr. Abdullah bin Said al-Saa’di expressed his pride in contributing to the exhibition, noting that “Omani postal stamps document the achievements and events of our beloved country, serving as graceful ambassadors that showcase Oman’s modern history and heritage worldwide.” He highlighted how stamps specific to Sur not only celebrate the city’s unique cultural legacy but also bring awareness to its iconic landmarks. The exhibition, he added, is a “fitting tribute as Sur is honored as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2024.”
