17 Mar 2024

Doha, Qatar – Hassan al Haydos, who skippered Qatar to a second successive Asian Cup title in February, has retired from international football.

The Qatar Football Association (QFA) announced Al Haydos’ decision on Saturday, bringing down the curtain on a 16-year career highlighted by back-to-back AFC Asian Cup victories.

Al Haydos is the most capped player for Qatar with 182 appearances, scoring 41 times.

“The Qatari Football Association extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to the captain of our national team, Hassan Al Haydos, following his decision to retire from international football after a long career,” the QFA said in a statement.

“Words cannot thank you enough over the past years, the leader on and off the field, Hassan Al-Haydos. Always in our hearts.”

Al Haydos, 33, scored twice in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 with the defending champions going on to beat Jordan in the final.

Having made his debut for Qatar in 2008, Al Haydos was also captain of the squad that won their first AFC Asian Cup title in 2019.

Al Haydos will continue to play for Al Sadd SC, who lead the Qatar Stars League standings.
