Omani shutterbug Marwa al Yarubi’s photograph ‘A Mask’ has won second place in an international competition organised  by the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) on the theme ‘We stay home’.

The competition was launched online in May and the results were declared on September 26.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Marwa said, “I started photography in 2015. I love to photograph people’s faces. I participated in the FIAP competition and won second place.

“Around 1,881 photographers participated in the competition which saw more than 5,000 pictures from 90 countries. Only ten contestants qualified for the finals.”

She added that the competition aimed to encourage people and photographers to stay at home and practise their hobbies from home to protect themselves and their communities from COVID-19.

“My winning photo expresses the current situation of the pandemic, and the people’s keenness to wear the mask, urging people to follow methods of preventing the virus. The picture was taken at home using external lights, in black and white.”

Marwa said her photo ‘A Mask’ won several international prizes – a gold medal from Morocco, and silver and bronze medals in the Tour Circit 2020 competition in Serbia.

Marwa conveyed her thanks to the Oman Photographic Association at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for its encouragement and the opportunity to participate in international photography competitions.

“I hope to hold a personal exhibition of photography soon and display my works.”
