New York, USA – Oman called for the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East at the 11th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which is being held at the United Nations in New York and will continue till May 22.

The sultanate’s participation comes as it chairs the Seventh Session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East, reflecting international confidence in its role in supporting disarmament and regional security.

H E Omar bin Said Al Kathiri, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, delivered a statement on behalf of member states, saying the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East remains a strategic priority and an urgent need for regional stability. He said the goal represents an existing international commitment that requires coordinated efforts for implementation.

The statement pointed to growing challenges facing the global disarmament and non-proliferation regime, including the continued development of nuclear arsenals and rising rhetoric over their potential use. It warned that such trends pose risks to international peace and security.

Oman stressed the need to strengthen multilateral action and reach consensus-based outcomes to revitalise the NPT framework. It also called for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to disarmament, urging all countries in the region to engage constructively to build trust and support more stable security arrangements.

Oman reaffirmed its commitment to supporting international efforts on disarmament and non-proliferation, and to promoting dialogue-based solutions aimed at strengthening global security.
