Oman-Australia undersea cable to be ready by 2021

11 Mar 2020

Oman Australia Cable project (OAC), a sub-sea cable system to connect Muscat and Perth, is likely to be completed by December 2021, Australian submarine cables development firm SUB.CO announced last week.

In a statement posted on its website, SUB.CO announced that its [OAC] project has entered contract in force (CIF) status with its final system connection expected to be completed in December 2021.

“The project delivers a new international sub-sea cable system identified as OAC that will directly connect Muscat to Perth in Australia,” SUB.CO said in a statement on its website.

“I am delighted that OAC is now CIF and importantly we have been able to secure the required manufacturing and marine installation assets with SubCom to allow for a targeted 2021 completion date,” said SUB.CO founder Bevan Slattery.

Once completed, OAC will be the only submarine cable directly connecting continental Australia and EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), providing the first secure, diverse, express and lowest latency route between the two continents.

“With a series of other major submarine cable projects looking to enter CIF status in the next quarter, this is a tremendous success for the project and reduces project implementation risks and funding costs significantly,” Slattery said.

David Coughlan, CEO of SubCom, said, “Once deployed, OAC will enable high-capacity, low-latency transmission and open a much-sought route between Australia and EMEA. SubCom is very pleased to be moving forward with this project and we are confident in our ability to implement what will be a powerful and reliable system on behalf of SUB.CO.”

SubCom, which has been selected as the main contractor to build the cable system, is the leading global partner for undersea data transport requirements. It designs, manufactures, deploys, maintains, and operates the industry’s most reliable fiber optic cable networks.

The OAC cable system design is a three fibre pair system with an option to upgrade to four fibre pairs based upon final demand and will span approximately 9,700km, with branching units designed to potentially extend the system into Salalah and Djibouti in the future, SUB.CO said.
