Muscat  – The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) and Sumhuram Tourism Investment Company on Thursday signed an agreement to develop, operate and manage the Sumhuram Archaeological Park at Khor Rori in Dhofar governorate, in a move aimed at promoting sustainable tourism investment in cultural heritage.

The agreement was signed by H E Sayyid Ibrahim bin Said Al Busaidi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, and Hilal bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sumhuram Tourism Investment Company.

The project seeks to develop the historic city of Sumhuram – one of the sites included in the Land of Frankincense – and transform it into a world-class tourism destination. The development will combine the site’s historical authenticity with its natural surroundings while enhancing modern visitor experiences, reinforcing Dhofar’s position as one of the region’s leading tourism destinations.

The project will include a range of integrated tourism facilities such as luxury hospitality establishments, cultural and heritage attractions, eco-tourism experiences and nature adventures. Plans also feature restaurants, traditional craft centres and cultural activities reflecting authentic Omani identity.

The initiative is also expected to contribute to the national economy by supporting small and medium enterprises in the cultural and eco-tourism sectors, stimulating investment, and creating direct and indirect employment opportunities for residents of Dhofar, while encouraging greater community participation in tourism activities.

The project forms part of wider efforts to maximise the value of Oman’s cultural heritage, diversify sources of national income and promote sustainable development, while preserving the country’s cultural and natural assets and offering visitors a high-quality tourism experience that reflects the rich history and unique landscapes of the sultanate.
