Muscat – The National Centre for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery at The Royal Hospital has achieved a medical milestone with the successful implantation of Oman’s first CardioMEMS sensor for the remote monitoring of patients susceptible to heart failure.

The sensor was implanted by a specialised medical team comprising Dr Arif bin Ishaq Al Balushi and Dr Amina bint Sulaiman Al Busaidi, as part of efforts to adopt advanced medical technologies in the monitoring and management of heart failure.

The CardioMEMS sensor enables wireless, real-time measurement of pulmonary artery pressure through an interventional catheter-based procedure, without the need for open surgery. It provides medical teams with daily readings related to haemodynamics and pulmonary artery pressure, allowing changes in a patient’s condition to be monitored and early indicators of deterioration and fluid retention to be identified before clinical symptoms appear.

The technology also enables doctors to adjust treatment plans and medication doses according to changes in a patient’s condition. Continuous remote monitoring can help reduce the need for frequent hospital visits and emergency admissions, while supporting greater stability and improving the quality of life of patients and their families.

Dr Najib bin Zahran Al Rawahi, Director of the National Centre for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, said the introduction of the technology reflects the centre’s commitment to keeping pace with the latest medical innovations and employing digital technologies to advance cardiac care.

He commended the medical team for its expertise and efforts to enhance specialised healthcare services in Oman.

The achievement is part of the centre’s efforts to adopt innovative digital medical technologies, enhance specialised cardiac care and keep pace with developments in the monitoring and treatment of heart failure patients.
