Barka – In a drive to enhance tourism, urban infrastructure and community life, Eng Masoud bin Saeed al Hashmi, Governor of South Batinah, toured a series of major development projects in Rustaq and Barka last week.

The initiatives aim to combine modern leisure amenities with heritage preservation to attract visitors, create jobs and provide residents with new recreational and cultural spaces.

The governor began his visit with Phase II of the Ain al Kasfah development project, followed by inspections of the Tuway al Harah Market and the Rustaq Gate development projects. He later visited the Khor al Hafri project in Barka, describing it as a key initiative to diversify national income and attract thousands of visitors annually.

The Khor al Hafri project includes integrated facilities such as a marine activities club, jet ski rentals, restaurants, cafés, children’s playgrounds, running and cycling tracks, green spaces and areas for events and festivals. Supporting infrastructure includes roads, lighting, car parks and prayer and restroom facilities to ensure a seamless visitor experience.

Another flagship project, Lulu’at al Batinah (Pearl of al Batinah), forms part of the governorate’s broader urban development plan. Covering 33,450sqm with potential expansion of 10,000sqm, the project seeks to revitalise the old market, promote local heritage, attract investment, establish innovation centres and create employment opportunities. Its main facilities occupy about 6,258sqm.

Hashmi noted that the Barka waterfront project is now 70% complete, while the Musannah waterfront stands at 40%. Complementary projects, such as kiosks and promenades in Barka’s Al Silaha area, are progressing as part of the governorate’s vision for modern urban spaces.

“These projects are designed to enhance residents’ quality of life and provide attractive spaces for social, sports and tourism activities,” he said. “They align with Oman Vision 2040 by promoting sustainable urban development and modern, flexible public facilities.”

The governor underlined the importance of on-site monitoring to ensure contractors meet timelines and quality standards. He added that the initiatives not only serve local communities but also create economic opportunities.
