Sri Lions International proudly inaugurated its Oman Chapter last Friday at a grand event held at Al Falaj Hotel, Muscat, in the presence of distinguished guests and community leaders.
The ceremony marked a significant milestone for the rapidly growing community-based sports and social organisation.
Dr Kelum Sujith Perera, Founder and Chairman of Sri Lions International, expressed his delight, stating: “It is indeed a special occasion for us as we inaugurate our brand in the Sultanate of Oman. We are proud to appoint one of the most passionate Rugby lovers and a sportsman, Hamza Hidayathullah, as the first president of Sri Lions Oman.”

Dr Perera further highlighted the collective effort behind the organisation’s achievements. “Our accomplishments in such a short span are a result of the dedication and passion of everyone involved with Sri Lions. Together, we have set a new standard, and I am confident that our future holds even greater promise – with Oman now becoming our 6th chapter following the UAE, Sri Lanka, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Bahrain.”
Recognised by the Consulate General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, Sri Lions is known for its strong commitment to uplifting the Sri Lankan community through sports and social engagement, including Rugby, Cricket, and Netball.
Among the esteemed guests was Anodya Chirasrie – Charge D’ Affairs and Acting Ambassador at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Oman – who commended Sri Lions’ impact on the global stage. “Sri Lions is the only Sri Lankan Rugby team competing in the Men’s Open International Sevens Category at the Emirates Dubai Sevens. Their victories as Gulf Champions in 2019 and International Sevens Champions in 2024 are remarkable achievements.”
Sri Lions UAE currently competes in various disciplines including Rugby, Netball, Cricket, Golf, Swimming, Badminton, Volleyball, and Football. The Oman chapter will begin with Rugby and Volleyball, with plans to expand into other sports by next year.
Nabs al Busaidi, Chairman of Oman Rugby, welcomed Sri Lions Oman as the 9th registered team in the country’s rugby scene: “We’re thrilled to have Sri Lions Oman join us and look forward to seeing them in all local rugby tournaments.” The event concluded with warm wishes from the community, who extended their full support and encouragement to the newly appointed executive committee.
